APPT is the result of grassroots meetings of private practice professionals who were interested in impacting the regulation and legislation of mental health services. At the time the meetings were held in the fall of 1993, 45 participants established the initial organizational structure of APPT. The organization now has more than 200 members.

Therapists who have part-time or full-time practices are invited and encouraged to join, as are individuals who are involved in or interested in providing clinical services.

The accomplishments of APPT since it was founded in September, 1993, are incredible. Members throughout Nebraska represent counseling (marriage and family, addictions, EAP, and pastoral), social work, psychology, psychiatry, nursing, and educational therapy. APPT is the first truly multi-disclipinary organization for mental health providers in the state. APPT was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1995.

Contacts with other mental health groups around the state are maintained in order to determine legislative priorities for the future.
